In 1775 The Second Continental Congress Approved The Purchase of What Total Number of Vessels?
On October 13th, the year 1775, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania state, the Second Continental Congress approved the purchase of two vessels for the navy of America.
This historic approval gave birth to the naval force of the United States of America.
Currently, the US Navy is the world’s number one maritime force.
But why they had to purchase vessels at that time?
The reason is straightforward.
Mainly Continental Congress’s intention for buying these two vessels was to use them against the movements of Great Britain in the Atlantic ocean.
During the Revolutionary War, their navy force successfully operated in attacking British merchants and navy ships.
Although, during wartime, the continental navy was much weaker compared to the navy of Great Britain.
As per history, at that time, Great Britain was the most powerful nation in the sea.
During the time, they had around 200 battleships against America’s 27.
Even, the number increased much higher sometimes after the Revolutionary War began and reached around 500.
But contrary to this number American ships decreased to 20.
How Continental Navy Fought Against British Royal Navy With This Weak Condition?
In front of the mighty British Royal Navy, Continental Navy had no capability to fight and defeat them.
So, primarily Americans’ purpose was not to involve in direct confrontations with the Royal Navy.
Their primary purpose was to prevent and destruct British merchant ships and create a lack of supplies for their soldiers fighting against the American militias.
However, once France entered the Revolutionary War in 1778, colonists’ morale boosted significantly.
On 27th July 1778, France defeated British Royal Navy in the First Battle of Ushant.
Who Are Known As The Founding Fathers of The American Navy?
There was a total of three patriots, who are remembered as the founding fathers of the United States Navy.
They are John Adams, John Barry, and John Paul Jones.
John Adams: Adams served as the Second President of the United States of America.
He contributed many notable things to the US Navy, including adding powerful frigates, passing an act to relieve sick and disabled seamen, etc.
John Barry: Though John Barry was born in Ireland, but his contribution to the United States is unforgettable.
Barry was appointed as a captain in the Continental Navy on December 7th, 1775, the early stage of the American Revolutionary War.
John Paul Jones: Born in Scotland, John Paul Jones became the first well-known naval commander of the US navy.
He is also remembered as one of the founding fathers of the United States naval force.
